Madison, Wis. - All Illinois runners recorded new season-best times in the team's 29th place finish at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday. Redshirt senior Billy Magnesen finished first for the Illini, finishing 80th overall with a time of 24:21.2.Â
"Historically we've brought a lot of negative emotions towards this meet and performed below expectations," said head coach Sarah Haveman. "Today we were able to turn a corner and move forward. We are very proud of the resiliency the men showed today and the past few months as we have worked through some tough things that are out of our control."Â
Illinois finished with a score of 695. The Illini faced off against some of the top teams in the country at the Nuttycombe Invite, with 18 of the 33 teams currently being nationally ranked in the USTFCCCA national rankings. Additionally, seven of the teams are currently ranked in the top-10.Â
Redshirt senior Dan Lathrop placed second for the Illini and 112th overall recording a time of 24:32.9. Junior Zach Dale finished third for the Illini, placing 160th with a time of 24:56.2. Coming in right behind Dale was freshman Logan Hall, who placed 162nd overall and clocked a time of 24:56.9. Rounding out the Illini's top-five finishers was redshirt junior Caleb Hummer, who placed 181st recording a time of 25:15.3.Â
"Lathrop and Billy showed the tremendous leaders they are and in turn Hall, Dale, and Hummer have been able to evolve and continue to grow," Haveman said.Â
"We are very proud of how they ran today and are confident in their abilities moving forward."
Up next Illinois will travel to the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Ill. along with the women's team on Friday, October 12. The men's race will begin at 4 p.m. CT.Â
