NASHVILLE - Fighting Illini men's cross country earned a sixth-place finish on Saturday at Vanderbilt's Commodore Classic at Vaughn's Gap Cross Country Course. Redshirt senior Billy Magnesen led the way for the Illini, finishing 19th overall with a time of 25:36.7. Illinois finished with a score of 180, which placed them sixth out of the fourteen competing teams.
"Things didn't unfold in our favor in some ways, but there are a lot of positives we will be focusing on," said head coach Sarah Haveman. "Billy had a solid opener and Logan continued to execute maturely. Hummer and Dale are continuing to progress in a great direction."
139 individual participants competed in the Commodore Classic. Freshman Logan Hall was strong again for the Illini. In his second-career appearance for the Orange and Blue he finished second on the team and 28th overall with a time of 25:58.1. Redshirt junior Caleb Hummer turned in another top-five team finish for the Illini, placing 43rd with a time of 26:22.1.Â
Redshirt junior Zach Dale posted his second top-five team finish of the season for Illinois, finishing 46th with a time of 26:25.8. Colin Yandel rounded out the Illini's top-five finishers. The freshman from Hinsdale, Ill., placed 60th overall with a time of 26:46.5 in his first career top-five team finish.Â
"We have some pieces that will come forward in the next couple of weeks that will push us forward," Haveman said.Â
Up next, the Illini will travel to Madison, Wisconsin for the Ed Nuttycombe Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin on Friday, September 29th. The meet will begin at 11:00 a.m. CT.Â
