Peoria, Ill. - Redshirt senior Billy Magnesen raced to All-Region honors as Fighting Illini men's cross country placed 11th out of 31 teams at the NCAA Midwest Regional at Newman Golf Course on Friday. The Illini earned a team score of 303 and saw four runners finish in the top-75 in the 10K race.Â
"We are very proud of our men," said head coach Sarah Haveman. "They are a special group of student-athletes and how they have been able to stick together this season says a lot about them."
Magnesen was the top finisher for the Orange and Blue at the Midwest Regional placing 22nd overall to earn his first All-Region selection. The Hinsdale, Ill. native clocked a time of 31:25.9.Â
"Billy has been an outstanding leader all year," Haveman said. "I'm glad his last cross country season could end with his best regional performance of his career and all-region honors."Â
The next pair of runners to cross the finish for the Illini were freshmen Logan Hall and Colin Yandel running in their first collegiate 10K races. Hall placed 52nd overall with a time of 32:10.7. Yandel finished the race 66th overall, posting a time of 32:23.4.Â
"Logan and Colin have been a key part of our team all year," Haveman said. "For them to expand into these roles as freshmen says a lot about who they are and what they can accomplish here at Illinois."
Rounding out the top-five finishers for Illinois were redshirt junior Zach Dale and Redshirt Sophomore Jack LaLonde. Dale finished 10K in 32:31.2, good for 75th overall. LaLonde finished 86th overall, recording a time of 32:39.5.Â
Illinois men's cross country is set to return five of its seven runners from its postseason competitions.Â
