URBANA, Ill. – The Illinois men's and women's cross country team completed their first competition of the 2023 season, the Illini Open, on Friday, Sept. 1 at the UI Arboretum. The men's team won with 15 points and the women's team won with 28 points. Junior Halle Hill led the women's 5k with a new personal-best 17:30.8. Senior Jack Roberts broke the tape in the men's 6k (18:13.8) narrowly beating sophomore Brady Masters (18:13.81).
Junior Maggie Gamboa finished second and clocked a 17:39.5. Junior Anthony Maida placed third with a new personal-best (18:14.0) and senior Evan Cummins crossed fourth (18:29.0).
Sophomore Alex Partlow clocked a new personal-best (18:31.4) in his fifth-place finish and junior Nicolas Dovalovsky placed sixth (18:35.1). Sophomore Lydia Malecek finished eighth with a new personal-best (18:57.7).
All three freshman women who competed unattached finished inside the top-10: Mabry Bruhn fourth (18:47.2), Lynda Rotundo sixth (18:53.4) and Isabella Daley ninth (18:59.1). The lone freshman on the men's team, Kyle Clark, competed unattached too and placed seventh (18:58.3).
Senior Breena Shreeves recorded a new personal-best today in her tenth-place finish (18:59.9).
