STILLWATER, Okla. – The Illinois men's and women's cross country teams completed their 2023 season at the NCAA Midwest Regionals on Friday. The men's team placed sixth, and the women's team placed 10th. Senior Jack Roberts is moving on to the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Charlottesville, Va., on Nov. 18 after he placed 10th overall in the 10k and crossed at 30:27.6. He's the first Illini man to qualify for the national meet since Jon Davis in 2021.

Junior Halle Hill garnered All-Region honors with her 16th-place finish; she clocked a 21:00.8 6k. Roberts improved 35 spots and Hill improved 44 spots from the Midwest Regionals last year.

"We came up short on our team goals today but I am pleased with the progress we've made in such a short period of time," said cross country head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "Jack has done a tremendous job leading the men's team this season and now he has one more opportunity to represent our program on the big stage."

Junior Anthony Maida turned in a new personal-best in his 36th-place finish (31:34.2) as the second Illini men's runner to finish. He had the biggest year-over-year improvement on the team, going from 181st to 36th (145 places). Sophomore Brady Masters placed 44th (31:43.9), a 52-place improvement from last year's 96th-place finish.

Junior Sam Poglitsch was the second Illini women's runner to cross the finish line; she placed 43rd (21:36.6) and improved on her 51st-place finish last year. Junior Maggie Gamboa placed 47th (21:39.5), which was a massive improvement (89 places) from her 136th-place finish a year ago.

Freshman Avril Andre recorded a new personal-best 6k (21:51.2) when she placed 58th. Sophomore Alex Partlow recorded a new personal-best in his 47th-place finish (31:45.7). Senior Will Merrick (68th, 32:10.1) and junior Nicolas Dovalovsky (118th, 32:52.8) both registered new personal-bests.
