CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Fighting Illini men's and women's cross country teams placed first and second respectively in their meets at the EIU Walt Crawford Open on Friday. The men finished with a score of 27 and were led by freshman Logan Hall who finished fourth overall and clocked a time of 25:48.9 in the 8K race. The women finished with a score of 50 as sophomore Allison McGrath led the way finishing fourth overall in the 5K with a time of 18:23.1.
Tonight's race was the first for Sarah Haveman as head coach of both the men's and women's programs. Haveman enters her second season overall with the program after working as an assistant for the Illini last season. Â
"We took a lot of steps forward today," said Haveman. "It may not be glaringly noticeable on paper, but collectively and as individuals there were a lot of productive and positive things accomplished. Some of the highlights were certainly freshmen Emma Milburn and Logan Hall. They both raced boldly and progressed very well throughout the race. Today was something to build on and positive experiences were gained, that will serve us well as we head into the next few weeks."
The men were able to edge out host Eastern Illinois who finished with a score of 29. The Illini were strong with three more runners finishing in the top-10 along with Hall. Redshirt freshman Brayden Hamblen finished sixth with a time of 26:07.1. Redshirt junior Zach Dale came in right behind Hamblen in seventh finishing in 26:17.2. Caleb Hummer rounded out the Illini top-10 finishers, placing ninth with a time of 26:41.1.
"As a whole, our men's squad really rallied and came together to close well," Haveman said. "This was very encouraging."Â
The Illini women were paced by McGrath and Milburn. McGrath finished 15th in the event last year, which was her collegiate debut, and cut her time down this season by more than 12 seconds. In her first collegiate appearance Milburn was strong for the Orange and Blue. The freshman from Lake Forest, Ill. finished the meet in 18:37.7, good for seventh place. Redshirt Freshman Caroline Fix also placed in the top 10 in the 5,000m, finishing the race in 10th with a time of 18:56.5.
"We would like to recognize Caroline Fix for running confidently early on and setting the tone for her teammates," Haveman said. "Her initiative helped our women's team compete well as a team."  Â
Illinois cross country returns to action in two weeks when they race at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt on Saturday, September 15. The men's race will begin at 9:00 a.m. CT, and the women's meet will start the following hour at 10 a.m. CT
