Illinois second baseman Michael Massey was named the Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. Massey was named the Big Ten-Pac-12 Challenge MVP after hitting .500 with three doubles during a three-game sweep at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The sophomore had two hits in each of the last three games, including two doubles in a win over No. 11 UCLA on Friday.
The Illini finished the weekend with wins over Arizona and Washington, as Massey had two RBIs in the title-clinching win against the Huskies. Massey slugged .750 with a .538 on-base percentage over the weekend. Illinois (6-3) has won five straight games, including beating three of the previous six NCAA champions. The Illini have made a buzz around the nation and are ranked No. 25 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Massey's award is Illinois' first Big Ten Player of the Week since David Kerian won the award on May 18, 2015. The Illini won five Player of the Week awards in 2015.
