CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Making the program's first run to NCAA Championships in 30 years didn't stop the Fighting Illini Men's Cross Country team from taking care of business in the classroom, as the Illini were named one of USTFCCCA's 2016 All-Academic teams on Thursday afternoon. The Orange and Blue maintained a cumulative team GPA of 3.25 this past season.

In order to qualify for the honor, teams must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. One of 149 Division I schools to be recognized, the Illini combined for a 3.25 cumulative team GPA this season. The Illini have qualified for the accolade in each of Head Coach Jake Stewart's five seasons.

On the course, the Illini had their most successful season in 30 years, qualifying for the national meet for the first time since 1986. The Orange and Blue earned an at-large bid to the national meet after placing third at the NCAA Midwest Regional, edging out No. 13 Iowa State by seven points. One of three Big Ten teams to qualify for nationals, Illinois went on to place 23rd at the NCAA Championships.

Following the NCAA bid, the USTFCCCA honored Coach Stewart by naming him the 2016 Midwest Coach of the Year.

The Illinois distance group continues its indoor track season as Head Coach Mike Turk and the Illini Men's Track and Field squad travel to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Classic, held February 10-11.
