LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Fighting Illini Men's Cross-Country team used three top-10 finishes, and five in the top-15, to place runner-up at the Bluegrass Invite. True freshman Jon Davis led the squad in third place, while Zack Smith (9th) and Sean Pengelly (10th) also cracked the top-10.
In a meet that featured USTFCCCA preseason No. 9 Eastern Kentucky, Head Coach Jake Stewart sees value in the way his team competed today.
"To me it was about the competitive vibe, and seeing how we engaged [Eastern Kentucky] throughout the course of the meet," explained Coach Stewart. "I think we were good with it in some respects, and in other respects we probably needed to be a little bit better. But, I think that's pretty typical of performances this early in the year. I think we had a very solid day across the board, some really good things and some competitive decisions that we need to be more confident in making. It's certainly good to see a team like Eastern Kentucky; we certainly know where we think they're going to be at the end of the year. To be in this sort of race environment with them, we need to take it away as a positive."
Leading the Illini was true freshman Jon Davis, making his Orange & Blue. The Fithian, Illinois product ran his first 8K in an efficient 24:32.7 to place third behind individual winner Erick Rotich (Eastern Kentucky) and runner-up Jacob Thomson (Kentucky).
"He had a great day," said Stewart. "We put a race plan together for him to be pretty conservative through the first 5,000m, and then really give him a chance to run that last 3,000m and he did that really well. He showed really good patience and maturity. Going into the last 2,000m, and certainly last mile, he was probably outside of the top-10. For him to close on some of the guys he closed on, and finish where he did, was very impressive for a true freshman in his first 8,000m race."
Following Davis were four Illini harriers coming through the chute within 10 seconds of one another. Smith led the group with a time of 24:51.2 in ninth, followed by Pengelly a second later. After an Eastern Kentucky runner split up the four Illini, Alex Gold (12th/24:57.1) and Billy Magnesen (13th/25:02.1) crossed the finish line to round out the five Illini point-scorers.
"I think they were collectively pretty steady," Stewart said. "I think Zack [Smith] and Sean [Pengelly] had really good days. They showed themselves to be where they're at, fitness level-wise, and competed in a way that we can be very satisfied with. Gold had a great day as well. 12 months ago [Gold] really struggled here. He's done a complete 180 [degrees] in the span of a year on the same course, which he can be really encouraged by."
Although not counting towards the team score, red-shirt freshman Caleb Hummer (25:17.3) and red-shirt sophomore Dan Lathrop (25:26.1) followed shortly thereafter in consecutive fashion, placing 17th and 18th respectively.
Rounding out the Illinois performances were Zach Dale (21st/25:25.4) and Garrett Lee (30th/26:12.5).
With their first competitive race under their belt, the Fighting Illini will have two weeks to prepare for the Roy Griak Invite, held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on September 24.
