Fighting Illini Track and Field Record Seven Top-10 Program Marks at Third-Annual Gary Wieneke Memorial

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The men's and women's track and field teams finished the third-annual Gary Wieneke Memorial on Friday (May 2) from Demirjian Park where six different athletes recorded seven top-10 program marks on senior day.

Sam Poglitsch clocked the program's third-fastest time in her 3000m steeplechase event win (10:15.62) for the highest program mark of the day. Asia Thomas sprinted to the victory in the 100m dash on the program's sixth-fastest time (11.38), she also later placed second in the 200m with the program's 10th-fastest time (23.29). She's the only athlete today who recorded multiple top-10 program marks.

Halle Hill broke the tape in the 800m on a time of 2:05.83 which moved her up to seventh all-time in the program record book. Reece Ihenacho threw the program's eighth-furthest discus today at 55.00m (180-05) to claim the gold medal and Jackson Gilbert sprinted the program's eighth-fastest 400m (45.92) in his event win. Faith Deering moved up to fifth on the Illinois leaderboard in the hammer throw with her 59.88m (196-5) toss that placed her fifth today.

Viktor Morozov won the triple jump with a season-best mark of 15.94m (52-3 3/4) which is the 13th-best mark in the nation for the 2025 season thus far. Rose Yeboah captured the event crown in the high jump clearing 1.86m (6-1 1/4) and CJ Shoaf did so as well on the men's side, clearing 2.07m (6-9 1/2). Abria Smith threw 18.21m (59-9) in the shot put to take first place and Ji'eem Bullock won the long jump, 7.10m (23-3 1/2).

Anthony Maida won the 3000m steeplechase on a season-best time (9:02.87) with Joshua Daggett directly behind (9:05.47). Sophia Beckmon led the pack in the women's long jump, 6.33m (20-9 1/4), with teammate Elizabeth Ndudi in second place, 6.16m (20-2 1/2). Beckmon later would go on to win the 200m dash too, clocking in at 23.15.

It was a one-two-three sweep for the Illini in the men's 800m with Tadeas Placek pacing the Illini (1:49.63), Trey Sato finished second (1:50.79) and Nicolas Dovalovsky finished third (1:51.22). Jayon Morrow won the 200m dash (21.77), Will Merrick won the 1500m (3:41.12) and Tori Thomas won the pole vault, 4.23m (13-10 1/2).

Today's attendance was 779 and 16 seniors were honored, seven men and nine women. The men honored were: Ji'eem Bullock, Evan Cummins, Nicolas Dovalovsky, Kam Garrett, Will Merrick, Stephen Moody, CJ Shoaf. The women honored were: Halle Hill, Daniella Hubble, Tacoria Humphrey, Amalia Malecek, Lydia Malecek, Sam Poglitsch, Abria Smith, Darja Sopova and Tori Thomas.

The Orange and Blue track and field squads are off next week before they fly out to Eugene, Ore. for the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on May 16-18.
