NEW YORK, N.Y. – Illinois track and field assistant coach Garrett Scantling became the U.S. decathlon champion while alums Abria Smith and Tori Thomas both medal at the USATF Outdoor Championships on July 24-25.
Scantling topped the decathlon podium after scoring 8,526 points to win his fifth USATF Championships national title (three outdoors, two indoors) and his first since 2022. He won four events the long jump, shot put, 110mH and javelin while finishing top-3 in the pole vault, high jump and 100m.
The next day, Illini shot put alum, Smith, became the U.S. silver medalist in the event with a new lifetime best throw of 19.31m (63-4 1/4) and Illini pole vault alum, Thomas, was the U.S. bronze medalist with a new lifetime best as well, 4.60m (15-1).
