CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois men's and women's track and field teams completed their outdoor home opener, the Fighting Illini Twilight, on Saturday (April 26) from Demirjian Park where five different athletes recorded a top-10 program mark.
Sophia Beckmon ran a wind-aided 23.06 200m to take the gold and it's the sixth-fastest time in program history; Azariyah Bryant came in second running a 23.22w. Bryant earlier in the afternoon won the women's 100m clocking in at 11.36, while Asia Thomas took silver with the program's eighth-fastest time (11.41). Faith Deering threw the program's fifth-best hammer throw in her fourth-place finish, 58.95m (193-5).
Two Illini men set top-10 program marks in the shot put today with Will Rezny throwing the fifth-best mark in school history, 18.71m (61-4 3/4), in his second-place finish and Alex Sohn threw the 10th-best mark in school history, 17.88m (58-8), in his third-place finish.
Mia Morello earned the gold medal in the pole vault competition today as well clearing 4.25m (13-11 1/4) while Sam Poglitsch broke the tape in the 1500m (4:23.98).
Viktor Morozov jumped 7.62m (25-0) to place first in the long jump and Will Merrick won the 800m (1:49.84). Trey Sato finished directly behind Merrick in second (1:50.67). Stephen Moody took the win in the 1500m (3:47.64) and Joshua Daggett placed second (3:48.63). Cody Johnston captured the pole vault crown, 5.33m (17-5 3/4).
Jayon Morrow placed second in the 400m (48.36), Tadeas Placek finished third (48.49) and Kam Garrett placed second in the high jump, 2.08m (6-9 3/4). Javaris Ambrose took home the silver in the hammer throw, 61.00m (200-1). Eleftherios Kontonikola placed third in his first javelin competition since his shoulder injury last season, 53.55m (175-8).
Melissa Wullschleger also placed third in the women's long jump, 5.76m (18-10 3/4), Reece Ihenacho did so in the men's discus, 52.19m (171-2), and Kennady Anderson did as well in the 1500m (4:28.17). Phethisang Makhethe placed third in the hammer throw, 64.24m (210-9), trailing only Deanna Price and Amber Simpson.
Today's attendance was 2,689.
