CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois men's and women's track and field teams are set to travel to Indianapolis for the first road meet of the season, the Hoosier Horsepower Classic, at the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion. Field events are slated to start at 8:30 a.m. and track events to begin at 10:20 a.m. CT.
Two school records were set at the Fighting Illini Open this past weekend with Phethisang Makhethe taking down the weight throw record, 22.28m (73-1 1/4), and Tacoria Humphrey shattering the long jump record, 6.78m (22-3).
Humphrey's mark is also the current world and NCAA leading mark, the highest mark for an athlete competing for a Big Ten team and UI Armory record. Makhethe's mark is currently the second-best weight throw in the nation.
Five other Illinois women's long jumpers currently hold top-10 marks in the NCAA so far this season: Sophia Beckmon is second (6.71m (22-0 1/4)), Darja Sopova is fourth (6.51m (21-4 1/4)), Morgan Smalls is fifth (6.49m (21-3 1/2)), Elizabeth Ndudi is seventh (6.42m (21-0 3/4)) and Lucie Kienast is 10th (6.33m (20-9 1/4).
On the men's side Viktor Morozov scored the nation's second-best long jump with his 7.81m (25-7 1/2) leap and Cody Johnston own's the nation's sixth-best pole vault clearing 5.43m (17-9 3/4).
