IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Illinois men's and women's track and field teams completed the first day of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday, Jan. 19. Senior Tyler Sudduth and graduate student Amber Simpson each won and broke school records in today's weight throw competition.
Sudduth's 23.14m (75-11) heave ranks first in the country for 2024 and was a new Iowa Recreation Building facility record. Simpson has broken the school record in all three of her weight throw appearances this season; today's 21.94m (71-11) toss is eighth in the nation.
Junior Bara Sajdokova became the first Illini woman in 25 years to match Stacy Ann Grant's 1.87m (6-1 1/2) school record set back in 1999. Sajdokova walked away the event champion today with the nation's fourth best mark. Freshman Rose Yeboah made her Illini debut today on the high jump and placed second with the program's fifth-best mark, 1.84m (6-0 1/2).
Junior Tacoria Humphrey won the long jump competition and moved herself up to second in the Illinois record book at 6.42m (21-0 3/4). Freshmen Elizabeth Ndudi (6.37m (20-10 3/4)) and Sophia Beckmon (6.33m (20-9 1/4)) finished second and third, respectively.
Freshman Cody Johnston won the pole vault in his Illini debut. He now owns the program's seventh-best mark and is tenth in the country, 5.36m (17-7). Junior Halle Hill broke the tape in the 3000m clocking in at the school's fifth-fastest time (9:25.21).
Senior Will Rezny threw the ninth-furthest shot put in school history at 18.09m (59-4 1/4) and freshman Javaris Ambrose threw the program's seventh-best weight throw, 19.81m (65-0).
Sophomore Tadeas Placek closed out the meet for the Fighting Illini when he placed second in the 600m (1:17.34). This time currently slots in as third fastest in the nation.

The Orange and Blue track and field squads are back in action tomorrow (Jan. 20) for day two of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational with field events beginning at noon and track events start at 1 p.m. CT.
