ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Fighting Illini swim and dive team finished the final day of the Big Ten Championships on Saturday, Feb. 18. The team scored 215 points their highest total since the 2015-16 season (234), when the Big Tens were last at Canham Natatorium. Freshman Sara Jass, senior Kaleigh Haworth, junior Cara Bognar, sophomore Sydney Stoll and freshman Liv Dorshorst combined for 53 points in the finals, also the highest total since the 2015-16 season (56).
Jass is now the highest scoring swimmer, 18 points, since Samantha Stratford who scored 22 points in the 2016-17 season. Today she placed first in the 200 breaststroke C finals on a 2:14.40 which gave her half of her points. She scored three points in the 200 IM on day two (sixth, 2:00.97) and six points in the 400 IM on day three (third, 4:17.42).
Haworth scored the second most points for the Illini with 11. Five of her points came from her fourth-place finish in today's 200 breaststroke C finals (2:15.77). She scored the other six points on day three's 100 breaststroke (third, 1:02.61).
Bognar takes the bronze medal for Illinois individual scorers, compiling 10. She scored half of them in today's 200 butterfly C finals (fourth, 2:01.92). In the 1650 freestyle she placed 23rd (17:02.12) and added two points. Her remaining three points came from her third-place finish in the 400 IM C finals (4:19.48).
Sophomore Sydney Stoll and freshman Liv Dorshorst rounded out the scoring for the Illini outside of relays with seven each. Stoll's came from day two's second place finish in the 200 IM C finals (1:59.73). Dorshorst scored hers today in the 1650 freestyle, she placed 18th (16:47.37).
Junior Laurel Bludgen swam a new personal-best 100 freestyle (50.80) as the leadoff to the 400 freestyle relay. Senior Hannah Aegerter clocked a new personal-best in the 200 backstroke (2:00.77). Junior Lauren Beard finished out Illinois personal-bests at the Big Ten Championships with a 17:15.81.
