IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Illini swim and dive team finished day one of the Iowa Invitational with a new school record in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of senior Athena Salafatinos, junior Lily Olson, senior Isabelle Guerra, and sophomore Logan Kuehne now top the record books with a time of 1:31.02.
The Illini currently sit in second out of five teams with 234 points, they trail first place Nebraska by only 5.5 points. Day two begins tomorrow Dec. 2 with the prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m. CT.
BETWEEN THE LANES
There were a plethora of top-10 and season/personal-best times swam on day one. Freshman Sara Jass now holds the second fastest 200 IM time in school history with a 1:59.41. Sophomore Sydney Stoll claimed the seventh 200 IM time (2:02.44) and senior Kaleigh Haworth inserted herself in the tenth spot (2:03.1). Senior Isabelle Guerra is now the second fastest 50 freestyle in school history with a blazing 22.92.
Sophomore Paloma Canos-Cervera swam a personal-best 500 freestyle in the finals (4:59.15). Junior Lauren beard notched a personal-best as will in the 500 freestyle (5:00.48). Freshman Jillian Wilson swam a season-best 200 IM (2:06.99). Senior Mariclaire Lynch swam her personal-best 200 IM (2:07.4).
Freshman Alexis Wendel swam a season-best 50 freestyle (25.45) and sophomore Suvana Baskar topped her personal-best (24.57). Junior Sophia Burwitz touched a season-best 24.36 in the 50 freestyle alongside senior Lizzie Gile (24.58). Junior Anna Kurzydlo did not want to miss out, so she swam a personal-best 500 freestyle.
ON THE BOARDS
Three Illini divers qualified for the one-meter finals in day one: senior Erin Young, junior Brooke Michael and junior Taylor Michael. Erin Young dove her personal-best one-meter with a score of 254.95, she finished 11th. Brooke Michael finished 12th (252.75) and Taylor Michael finished 13th (252.65).
