ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Illinois women's golf team kicked off its 2021-22 season with a fifth-place finish at the Wolverine Invitational, carding the third-lowest round of the day with a 293 (+9) score on Tuesday (September 14) for a 54-hole total of 878 (+26) at the University of Michigan Golf Course.

The Illini had two top-10 finishers as junior Siyan Chen earned a third-place finish and senior Crystal Wang finished in a tie for eighth. Chen had a standout day, turning in a career-low 68 (-3) as she recorded a birdie and an eagle in a bogey-free round, to secure her career-best finish with a career-low 54-hole total of 213 (E) after rounds of 73 and 72 on Monday. Wang carded a 3-over 74 to conclude the two-day event with a 216 (+3) total.

"Today's conditions presented a great test and we managed the final nine holes well to move up the leaderboard," said head coach Renee Slone. "What an outstanding round for Siyan! To have a bogey free round on this course in these conditions is a testament to her patience and mental strength."

Senior Kornkamol Sukaree posted a final-round 5-over 76 for a 54-hole total 222 (+9) to finish in a tie for 33rd. Freshman Lexanne Halama and sophomore Isabel Sy rounded out the scoring the Orange and Blue. Halama shot a final round 4-over 75 and finished in a tied for 53rd with a 228 (+15) total. Sy notched her second-straight 3-over 76 and tied for 61st with a 54-hole total of 231 (+18).

Freshman Alise Knudson, teeing off as an individual competitor, shot 74-78-81 to tie for 65th in the 90-player field.

Host Michigan took home the tournament title with a 54-hole score of 851 (-1), with Virginia (863), Virginia Tech (868) and Iowa State (871) rounding out the top four. ISU's Liyana Durisic and the Wolverines' Mikaela Schulz tied for the individual title with a 3-under 210.
