DES MOINES, Iowa - Fighting Illini Track & Field claimed two event tites in relays during the final day of competition at the Drake Relays on Saturday. The men's 4x100m team comprised of sophomore Jason Shannon, freshman Declan Rustay and seniors Joe Haight and Devin Quinn placed first in the event finals. The women's 4x400m team featuring junior Chisom Nwoko, senior Briana Driver, sophomore Amira Aduma and junior Felicia Phillips also took home an event title in the 4x400m Invite. The Illini women finished tied for second place in the five-event Hy-Vee Cup Standings, finishing with 20 points along with Oklahoma State. It is the Illinois women's best finish in the Hy-Vee cup standings since its inception in 2013. The Illinois men's team placed third with 19 points.Â
"I'm proud of the way we ended on the relays," said head coach Mike Turk. "I was pleased when I looked up at the final standings. The men winning the 4x100 and the women winning the 4x400 were great performances. I thought the 4x400 had a good showing all-around. It was a good meet."  Â
After winning their heat yesterday in the first round of the 4x100m to qualify for for today's final, the Illini stormed ahead to claim the event title in today's final. The team of Shannon, Rustay, Haight and Quinn clocked a 40.20 finish to win the title at the Drake Relays.Â
"Yesterday in the prelims the men didn't look real sharp," Turk said. "Today was our best relay work of the year. The exchanges were great, smooth, fast, and we moved around the track as well as we have all season."
Later on in the women's 4x400Â Invite, the Illini women would see a first-place finish time. The team of Nwoko, Driver, Aduma and Phillips recorded a time of 3:47.85 to win the event title.Â
"Everyone ran great," Turk said. "What a difference a year has made for Felicia Phillips. On the DMR she also ran a tremendous 400 leg. I love to see her committed to racing. She's going for it, she's decisive and has made a huge difference this year."Â
The Illinois men achieved a second-place finish in the unseeded 4x400. The team of Rustay, Haight, sophomore Doug Wilson and freshman Jaden Jackson clocked a finish time of 3:14.95, a season best for the Orange and Blue in the event.Â
The Illini also saw top performances Saturday afternoon in the women's Sprint Medley and in the Men's Distance Medley Relay. The women's sprint medley team, comprised of Driver, Janile Rogers, Nwoko and Mikaela Lucki placed second with a time of 3:55.79.
The men's DMR also secured a top-five finish at the Drake Relays. The team of seniors Denis O'Callaghan, Haight, Konrad Eiring and sophomore Irwin Loud placed third, clocking a finish time of 9:51.19.Â
