Illini Track & Field Competes At Husker Invitational This Weekend

Field events begin Friday at 4 p.m. CT; Final running events Saturday at 2 p.m. CT
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Fighting Illini track & field heads to Lincoln, Neb. to compete at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational hosted by the University of Nebraska. The meet, which will be held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, will begin on Friday, February 1 at 4 p.m. with field events. Preliminary running events and some final running events will follow into the evening. The meet will continue with field events on Saturday, February 2 at 9 a.m. CT. Final running events will begin at 2:10 p.m. CT.

Know The Field
Along with the Illini, eight other schools will be competing in Iowa City this weekend at the 35 teams are scheduled to compete in Lincoln this weekend at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. Georgia leads the pack of ranked teams at the invitational, with their men's squad ranking sixth and the women's team ranking ninth. The Georgia women are the defending NCAA Indoor Champions. Other ranked opponents include the No. 11 Stanford men, the No. 15 Stanford women and the No. 15 Kansas State men. The Illini men's squad enters the weekend ranked No. 25 in the latest USTFCCCA poll.

Nwoko started the season with titles in both the Pole Vault (3.76m) and 200m (24.74, tied personal-best) at the Illini Open
2018 Indoor Season: Placed seventh in the 400m at Big Ten Championships ... Ran the second fastest 400m in Illinois history at Big Ten Championships, timing 53.26 in prelims ... Timed a 400m PR at Rod McCravy, the sixth-fastest in Illinois history, with a time of 54.16 ... Set a PR in the pole vault (12'7.5", 3.85m) and 200m (24.74) at the Illini Classic ... Illini Strong In Final Indoor Home Meet
Fighting Illini track & field had their final home meet of the indoor season last weekend, the Illini Invitational at the UI Armory on January 26. The Illini men's squad took home titles in six events, while the women's team won four event titles. Jason Shannon led the men's team with two event titles, setting PR's in both the 60m and 200m. Sophmore Jon Davis won an event for the third consecutive week with a 1:52.17 finish in the 800m. Senior Sade' Hargrove set a new PR in the 60m with a 7.58 finish. Sophomore Nicki Cast won the 3K with a new personal-best time of 10:04.46
Shannon Stars At Illini Invitational
Sophomore Jason Shannon took home titles in both the 60m and the 200m, setting new PR's in both events. Shannon won the 60m title with a finish time of 6.84. He then went on to take the 200m race by clocking a new personal-best 21.85 finish time.
Driver Wins Second Long Jump Title of 2019
Senior Briana Driver won her second long jump title of the season at last weekend's Illini Invitational, recording a jump of 5.86m. She last won the event two weeks ago at the UI Armory at the Illini Open with a mark of 5.81m. Her season-best mark came at the Larry Weiczorek Invitational when she recorded a mark of 6.04m, a new indoor PR. The mark earner her second-place, and first among collegiate competitors.

Seven Fighting Illini accross different events are ranked in the top-60 nationally in their respective events to this point in the indoor season.Three of those Illini have finishes that rank in the top-40 nationally

Illini Men Nationally Ranked Heading into February
The Illinois men's track and field team ends the month ranked 25th in the latest USTFCCCA National Rankings Poll released on January 28. In the regional rankings, the Illini men rank seventh in the latest poll, while the women's team ranks 14th.
Up Next
The Illini will split for meets next weekend, heading to both Fayetteville, Arkansas for the Tyson Classic hosted by the University of Arkansas, as well as to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Classic. Both meets will take place on Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9.
