Day One Results
AMES, Iowa - The Illinois women's track and field team got its weekend underway on Friday with the first day of competition at the Iowa State Classic. On the opening day of events, the Illini had two athletes advance to Saturday's finals, three top-10 finishes and a mark that ranks among the best in school history.
In the 60m hurdles, Breeana Coleman qualified for Saturday's finals with the fastest time in prelims. She ran 8.44 to easily grab the top spot heading into finals. The other Illinois athlete to advance to the finals in her event was Kymbriona Taylor. She qualified for tomorrow's 60m finals with a time of 7.85, the seventh-fastest time of the day.
In the 200m dash, a pair of Illini recorded top-10 finishes and season-best times. Janile Rogers finished sixth in 24.68, the fastest time by an Illinois runner this season, while Taylor finished 10th in 25.14, the second-best mark by an Illini this year.
Kandie Bloch-Jones matched her season best in the high jump, clearing 1.77m (5' 9.75") to finish third.
In the 5,000m, Alyssa Schneider finished in 12th place with a time of 16:21.43. That time was a career-best showing for Schneider, improving upon the 16:29.43 performance she had last season. Last season's mark had been the second-fastest time in school history.
The Illini will look to continue improving on the second day of action at the Iowa State Classic. Competition resumes tomorrow at 12 p.m. CT with the women's pole vault.
