CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Three Illinois decathletes (Jip de Greef, Andreas Hantson and Tim Pelkmans) completed their decathlons today (April 10) at the Illini Deca-Jam at Demirjian Park. De Greef left the field as the event winner with a shiny new school record of 8,039 points becoming the first Illini decathlete ever to surpass 8,000+ points in program history.
The Amersfoort, Netherlands natives second day was highlighted by a win the pole vault as he cleared 5.17m (16-11 1/2). He earned a pair of silver medals in the 110mH (14.41) and in the javelin, 52.17m (171-2) before taking third in the 1500m on a new personal-best time (4:49.20) and finished fourth in the discus, 39.22m (128-8). His 8,039 points are not only a personal best and school record, but it also leads the NCAA for the 2026 season currently and will get him into the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Hantson finished third in the competition today and third in the Illinois record books as well with a score of 7,733 points. In five events today he finished in all five positions sequentially through the day. He won the 1500m (4:27.20), earned second in the discus [41.73m (136-11)], finished third in the javelin [51.39m (168-7)], placed fourth in the pole vault [4.67m (15-3 3/4)] and finally took fifth in the 110mH (15.34). His 7,733 points are a new personal best for him and ranks fourth in the NCAA so far this season which should punch his ticket to the national meet.
Pelkmans placed fourth in the competition today with 7,157 points which now ranks fifth in the program record book. His day was highlighted in the track events where he captured silver in the 1500m (4:46.70) and earned bronze in the 110mH (14.95). His score has him at 15th in the nation so far.

The rest of the Orange and Blue track and field squad will begin their competitions tomorrow (April 11) on the final day of the Illini Deca-Jam. Field events start at 11 a.m. and track events begin at 12 p.m. CT.
