Five Illini Advance to Quarterfinals at NCAA West Prelims

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Fighting Illini men's track and field team wrapped up day one of the NCAA West Preliminary Round of Championship with five Illini qualifying for the quarterfinals in their respective events. Stephon Pamilton, DJ Zahn, Cam Viney, David Kendziera and Joe McAsey will compete in quarterfinal races tomorrow, while Vanier Joseph and Brandon Stryganek, along with Kendziera, await first-round competition.

Stephon Pamilton and DJ Zahn advanced to the quarterfinals of the 400m after placing second in their heats. DJ Zahn clocked a personal-best time of 45.69, the fifth-fastest time in school history, while Pamilton crossed the finish line with a time of 46.52. The two will try to qualify for a spot at the NCAA Championships in the event tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. The Illini will also have two athletes competing in tomorrow's 400m hurdles quarterfinal which is set for a 7:30 p.m. CT start. Cam Viney finished third in his heat to keep his season alive, clocking a time of 50.82, while David Kendziera took fourth in his heat with a personal-best time of 51.10.

Joe McAsey competed in the sixth and final heat of the 800m and finished first with a time of 1:49.65. His finish automatically qualified him for tomorrow's quarterfinal, set to take place at 7:00 p.m. CT.

The top-three finishers in each quarterfinal heat of the 400m 400m hurdles and 800m, along with the next three fastest times, will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene.

Jannis Toepfer competed in the 10,000m and finished 22nd with a time of 30:11.41. Liam Markham closed out his season in the 1,500m as he finished with a time of 3:48.80, while Julian Smith clocked a 10.71 in his final 100m race at Illinois. Smith still has the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championships as a member of the 4x100m relay team, as the squad will compete in the quarterfinal race Saturday at 6:00 p.m. CT.

Cody Klein ended his career at Illinois on Thursday, finishing 30th in the pole vault with a mark of 16-3 1/4 (4.96m), while Ben Dodds took 34th in the javelin with a mark of 196-11 (60.03m).

Illinois will resume action at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Friday, beginning with the hammer throw at 10:00 a.m. CT, with running events slated for a 5:00 p.m. CT start.
