Drake Relays Results | Schedule
DES MOINES, Iowa. -- The Illinois men's track and field wrapped up day two of the Drake Relays with three spots in Saturday's event finals. The 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay teams will compete in tomorrow's finals, while Vanier Joseph advances to the finals of the 110m hurdles. The Illini also scored points towards the HyVee Cup title with a third-place finish in the 4x800m relay.
The 4x100m relay team finished second in the prelims, winning the heat with a time of 39.72. The squad of Julian Smith, Brandon Stryganek, Stephon Pamilton and DJ Zahn ran just off of a season-best time and will compete in tomorrow's finals, set to begin at 3:52 p.m. CT. The 4x400m relay team of DJ Zahn, Joe McAsey also advanced to tomorrow's finals after clocking a season-best time of 3:05.84, which currently leads the Big Ten. The final's are slated for a 3:20 p.m. start.
Individually, Vanier Joseph will represent the Illini in tomorrow's 110m hurdles finals. The senior clocked his second-fastest time of the season, 13.83, to win his heat. He will compete for his second straight Drake Relays title tomorrow at 2:42 p.m.
Illinois scored its first points towards the HyVee Cup title in the 4x800m relay. The team of Zebo Zebe, Malik Lee, Josh Jones and Joe McAsey clocked a time of 7:23.07 to place third. In the field events, Cody Klein placed 11th in the pole vault with his second-best mark of the season at 5.00m. Corey Hammon and George Wayda competed in the decathlon for the first time this season and placed 11th and 12th, respectively.
On Thursday, the 4x1600m relay team clocked the program's fastest time in over 30 years to place second. The team of Graham Morris, Garrett Lee, Ian Barnett and Liam Markham finished with a time of 16:24.29. Paul Zeman competed in the 5,000m and clocked a personal-best time to place 11th.
The Illini will be back in action tomorrow morning beginning with the shuttle hurdle relay prelims before competing in the sprint medley relay and distance medley relay finals. The remaining schedule of Illini action at the Drake Relays can be found below.
