CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Fighting Illini (16-15, 7-8 B1G) play their first of three consecutive home series this weekend with a three-game nonconference slate against New Orleans. Friday's first pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT, Saturday's game is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT, and Sunday's series finale is slated for 11 a.m. CT.
Admission is free for all three games, while the action from Illinois Field will stream on B1G+.
Illinois' 12-game homestand is its longest since the 2017 season, when the Illini hosted 12 straight games from March 17-April 2.
LAST TIME OUT
Illinois opened its three-week homestand with a 7-3 win over Indiana State on Tuesday night at Illinois Field.
The Fighting Illini bullpen held the Sycamores to only one run over the final seven innings.
After Richie LaCien got the start, going two innings with two strikeouts and one earned run, Ike Young came in and dominated in the longest outing of his career. Facing only 11 batters in his 3.1 innings of work, Young allowed only one hit while amassing a career-high five strikeouts.
Luke Weber entered in the sixth and went 2.1 shutout innings with only two hits allowed and two strikeouts. After Tore Indomenico finished the eighth, Liam McKillop closed the door in the ninth with a scoreless frame.
Daniel Contreras and Collin Jennings each posted three RBI in the win. Contreras went 2-for-4, while Jennings hit his eighth home run of the season in the second.
ABOUT NEW ORLEANS
New Orleans makes its first trip to Champaign with a 14-21 record this season, including a 6-12 mark in Southland Conference play. The Privateers posted a series win over McNeese last weekend before narrowly falling to No. 10 Southern Miss on Tuesday.
The New Orleans offense is led by four qualified hitters with a .300 batting average or better. INF Evan Rogers leads the way with a .341 average to go alongside 21 RBI, while he joined by OF Dylan Biddick (.333), UTIL Eli Tidwell (.321), and OF Owen Smith (.302). OF Kruise Newman holds team-high marks in home runs (8) and RBI (32), while Biddick, Smith, and Tiswell have all hit at least five homers this season.
The Privateer pitching staff has a combined 5.59 ERA this season. Defensively, New Orleans leads the country in doubles plays turned with 37 this season.
SERIES HISTORY
The Illini and the Privateers have played five times in the all-time series, which dates back to 1977. New Orleans holds a 3-2 edge ahead of the first series between the sides to be played in Champaign.
The Illini split a two-game road series against New Orleans in 1977, while the Privateers claimed a series win when the sides met in The Big Easy in 1990.
The 1977 contests came during a week-long Illini road trip throughout the state of Louisiana. That swing also included games against Southeastern Louisiana, LSU, and Southwestern Louisiana (now called the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) along with neutral-site games against Stetson and Missouri and a road contest at Delta State in Mississippi. Illinois was supposed to begin the trip with a game at Lambuth University in Tennessee, but it was rained out.
The sides met in 1990 for a true three-game series, with the Privateers winning two of the three contests. Illinois also took on Tulane during their time in New Orleans.
