CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois men's and women's track and field teams return home to host the fourth-annual Gary Wieneke Memorial on Friday-Saturday (May 1-2) in Demirjian Park.
Illinois enters its home meet with strong momentum after splitting competition between the Wake Forest Invitational and the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational two weeks ago that saw the Orange and Blue make a wave of top-10 program marks.
The heptathlon group highlighted the weekend in Gainesville, Fla. as JaiCieonna Gero-Holt and Meagan Humphries dominated the field finishing first and second, respectively. Gero-Holt totaled 5,870 points, the second-highest score in program history, while Humphries followed closely with 5,847 points, the fourth-best mark all-time. Both scores currently rank among the top three nationally this season and secured spots at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Gero-Holt made her presence known throughout the competition, winning the high jump with the fourth-best mark in school history at 1.84m (6-0 1/2) and adding the program's 10th-best shot put at 14.18m (46-6 1/4).
In the field events, Illinois continued to climb the record books. Jacob Cookinham delivered the fourth-best shot put in program history at 19.00m (62-4), while Jonathan Kapitolnik made an immediate impact in his Illini debut, clearing the fifth-best high jump mark in school history at 2.15m (7-0 1/2). The Illini pole vault group also impressed, led by Mia Morello, who improved her own second-best mark in program history with a clearance of 4.50m (14-9), a height that currently ranks among the top marks nationally this season.
On the track, Illinois saw several top-10 performances. Pol Molins ran the third-fastest 1500m in program history at 3:39.26, a time that ranks among the top times in the nation this season, while Kennady Anderson recorded the seventh-fastest 3000m steeplechase in school history at 10:18.80.
In the horizontal jumps, Katharina Graman and Romi Tamir each etched their names into the record book in the triple jump, recording the fourth- and sixth-best marks in program history. Reece Ihenacho continued his strong season in the throws, improving his ninth-best discus mark to 55.65m (182-7), while Sophia Beckmon sprinted to the ninth-fastest 100m time in school history at 11.45.
With momentum building across all event groups, the Illini now turn their focus to Demirjian Park, where they will look to carry their record-breaking form into the Gary Wieneke Memorial in front of a home crowd. Field events are set to begin at 12 p.m. on both days while track events start at 1 p.m. on Friday and 2:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.Â
