Five Illini Earn CSC Academic All-District Honors

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois baseball had five players earn College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors, the association announced today.

Reed Gannon, Ben Plumley, Sam Reed, Kyle Schupmann and Jack Zebig all received the distinction.

In order to qualify for CSC Academic All-District consideration, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, earn a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, and must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games played OR must start in at least 66 percent of the institution's games. For pitchers, a student-athlete must have made at least 17 appearances OR pitched 35 innings. 

Gannon earns the distinction for the first time in his career. He appeared in 23 games, making one start, amassing a career-best 21 strikeouts and held opponents to a .255 average. Gannon earned his bachelor's degree in finance in agribusiness in December and his graduate certificate in strategic leadership & management in May.

Plumley receives honors for the second-straight year. He made 10 starts in his first season in the starting rotation, striking out a total of 40 batters, which ranked second on the Fighting Illini. He received his bachelor's degree in agricultural and consumer economics in December and is working toward his master's in accountancy.

Reed, a recreation, sport & tourism major, logs his first CSC All-District accolade. He made 18 appearances during the campaign, totaling 31 strikeouts in 33.2 innings of work.

Schupmann, an agribusiness markets & management major, also picks up his first-career CSC All-District honor. He played and started 52 games at third base, slashing .288/.389/.545 to go along with eight doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and 44 RBI.

Zebig, a mathematics major, earns his first CSC All-District award. He started all 54 games at shortstop, posting an overall slash of .303/.409/.483 with 10 doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 47 RBI.
