Johnston Earns All-America Honors for the Second-Consecutive Season

Recap

Full Results
EUGENE, Ore. – Illinois pole vaulter Cody Johnston earned his second-consecutive outdoor All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in his seventh-place finish, 5.53m (18-1 3/4), on Wednesday (June 11) from Hayward Field at Oregon.

Johnston is the first Illini men's pole vaulter to earn All-America honors in consecutive seasons since Dean Starkey last achieved it 36 years ago in 1988 and 1989. Additionally, he collects the program's 16th outdoor NCAA First-Team All-America honor in the event.

This closes a stellar sophomore season for Johnston where he became the men's program's first Big Ten Outdoor Champion vaulter in 31 years; Darren McDonough was the last Illini man to top that podium in 1994. Johnston was the program's 10th vaulter to earn gold in the pole vault and brought home the program's 13th individual B1G title.

Had it not been for a mix up with the standards, Johnston would own the Big Ten Outdoor Championships meet record with his 5.64m (18-6) vault he won with.

Earlier in the season Johnston earned his first All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships with an eighth-place finish on his personal-best clearance of 5.61m (18-4 3/4) this past March. He's now a three-time All-American with two honors outdoors and one indoors.
