Schaefbauer Clinches as Illini Win Third Straight

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Fighting Illini junior McKenna Schaefbauer clinched the Illinois women's tennis 4-0 sweep at No. 60 Purdue on Sunday to wrap up the regular season. Action took place outdoors from the Schwartz Tennis Center as the Orange and Blue swept their seventh match of the campaign.

No. 42 Illinois improved to 13-11 on the season and 8-5 in Big Ten action with the victory. Purdue moved to 11-9 overall and a 5-8 mark in Big Ten play with the loss. The Fighting Illini have now secured the last 12 decisions over the Boilermakers. The victory in West Lafayette marked Illinois' fifth road win of the year and fourth straight.

The Illini claimed their 16th doubles point of the season, striking first against Purdue. Illinois has won the opening tally 10 times in Big Ten play. 

No. 3 doubles wrapped up first as Schaefbauer and Kasia Treiber earned a 6-4 win, improving to 17-12 overall, 16-6 in dual play, and 10-2 in Big Ten action. Purdue followed with a 6-4 win of its own on the top doubles court before all eyes turned to No. 2 doubles. Violeta Martinez and Alice Xu got the final say in the 7-5 decision, clinching the doubles point for the Illini. The Illini tandem improved to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in league action with the victory.

The Illini kept their foot on the gas, taking five of the singles first sets and all three completed second frames.

Megan Heuser was the first off the singles courts, claiming a quick 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 to push the Illinois lead to 2-0. The senior improved to 14-11 overall and 7-3 in Big Ten play with her straight-set victory.

Treiber earned a win of her own moments later at No. 6 singles, taking a 6-2, 6-2 decision. The victory marked the senior's 12th of the season and she climbed to a 6-4 record in conference play.

Schaefbauer closed things out for the Fighting Illini with a 6-3, 6-3 win on the top singles court. With the win, the Illinois junior improved to 14-15 on the year, playing all of her dual matches at No. 1 singles.
