URBANA, Ill. – The Fighting Illini women's tennis team took an early lead with the doubles point but No. 49 Iowa responded with the next four decisions on Friday from the Atkins Tennis Center. Illinois moved to 5-6 in action from the Atkins Tennis Center with the 4-1 Big Ten home-opener loss.
No. 46 Illinois moves to 6-8 on the season and 1-2 in Big Ten play. Iowa improves to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten action.Â
The Fighting Illini claimed their eighth doubles point of the season to get on the board first against Iowa on Friday night. Action finished in sequential order by court number with the Hawkeyes earning the first win at No. 1 doubles before the Orange and Blue claimed victories at No. 2 and 3.
Alice Xu and Violeta Martinez climbed to 6-3 when working together this season with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. McKenna Schaefbauer and Kasia Treiber clinched the opening point with a 6-4 decision at No. 3 after trailing 3-4 and winning three-straight games. Schaefbauer and Treiber are up to a 9-4 dual record when working together and are 3-0 in Big Ten play.
Iowa tallied the next four points on the singles courts, picking up wins at No. 4, 1, 6, and 3, respectively, to win the match, 4-1.Â
