INDIANAPOLIS – The Illinois men's and women's track and field teams finished the first day of the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday (Feb. 28) from the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavillion. Tacoria Humphrey shattered multiple long jump records including the Big Ten, school and Big Ten Indoor Championships records en route to her title win, 6.94m (22-9 1/4).
Humphrey becomes the first Illini long jumper (sixth individual in program history) to top the B1G Indoor podium in 18 years since Yvonne Mensah did so in 2007. Her mark of 6.94m ranks as the second best in the nation for the 2025 season.
Sophia Beckmon earned silver in the long jump making it a one-two finish for the Illini with her 6.60m (21-8) leap. Morgan Smalls placed fifth (6.31m (20-8 1/2)) and Darja Sopova placed seventh (6.12m (20-1) as well to make Illinois take up half the podium.
Phethisang Makhethe earned a Big Ten Indoor Championships silver medal in the weight throw with her 23.02m (76-6 1/4) toss. Jordan Koskondy moved into NCAA Indoor Championships qualifying position with her 22.28m (73-1 1/4) heave that earned her fifth in competition today and it's the second-best throw in school history.
Tori Thomas claimed the bronze medal in the pole vault clearing 4.46m (14-7 1/2) while Mia Morello placed sixth 4.26m (13-11 1/4).
Cody Johnston placed sixth in the pole vault, 5.35m (17-6 1/2), and Tyler Sudduth also placed sixth in the weight throw, 21.67m (71-1 1/4).
The women's DMR team of: Kennady Anderson, Azariyah Bryant, Sam Poglitsch and Halle Hill placed sixth (11:11.40). The men's DMR team of: Nicolas Dovalovsky, Jackson Gilbert, Trey Sato and Will Merrick replicated this result placing sixth as well (9:41.05).
Melissa Wullschleger placed seventh in her first ever Big Ten Indoor Championships pentathlon with the program's fourth-best score, 3,984 points.
Asia Thomas qualified to the 60m finals running the fourth-fastest qualifying time in the prelims (7.26). Dewayne Johnson won his 60mH heat to advance to tomorrow's finals (7.80).
The women's team currently leads the field with 50 points after day one, while the men sit in ninth place with nine points.
