COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Illinois swim and dive team completed final day of the Big Ten Championships on Saturday (Feb. 22). The 400 freestyle relay team of Sydney Stoll, Molly Yetter, Logan Kuehne and Laurel Bludgen broke the nine-year-old school record in their 12th-place finish (3:20.56).
"I am so proud of this team," said head coach Jeana Kempe. "From the very beginning of the season we knew this team was going to be special. This team is the definition of love and famILLy. They showed up for each other day in and day out. This senior class rose to the occasion as fantastic leaders and we couldn't be more excited for the future of this program!"
Stoll also swam the program's second-fastest 100 freestyle (49.50) in the preliminary round to qualify for the C finals. In the finals session she swam the exact same time to take 20th place scoring five points. She led the team in individual points scored with 16 after scoring 11 last night in her 16th-place finish in the 200 freestyle finals (1:47.30).
Two new top-10 program marks were swam in the 200 backstroke preliminaries this morning by Sophia Paduano who recorded the program's fifth-fastest time (1:59.66) and Kalina Nikolaeva who touched the program's sixth-fastest time (1:59.88).
Today's diving competition was the platform dive where Bethany Mercer placed 26th (196.55) two spots shy of scoring team points. Elle Crisostomo placed 36th with a score of 173.80.
