CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 23 Illinois women's gymnastics team will compete with No. 19 Michigan State in Dare to Dream night on Monday at 6 p.m. in Huff Hall.
ABOUT THE MEETÂ
This meet against Michigan State was originally scheduled for Friday, February 17, but was postponed because of the tragedy at the Michigan State campus earlier that week. Because of the postponement, Senior Night was moved to March 11, though Dare to Dream will still take place.Â
LAST TIME OUTÂ
The Illini are coming off a 196.825 third-place finish in the Big Five meet, where the Illini secured their highest beam score of the season with a 49.350.
Illinois started the night on beam where Mia Takekawa picked up the highest team score with a 9.900. Ruthuja Nataraj and Amelia Knight both earned a 9.875, with Nataraj tying her career-high. Mallory Mizuki and Abby Mueller both scored a 9.85 with Mia Townes securing a 9.725.Â
Moving onto floor, Kadyn Fitzgibbon locked the top spot with a 9.875 in her first performance in the lineup. Mueller, Takekawa, Townes and Nataraj were right behind her with a 9.85.Â
Julia Waight was the highest scoring Illini on vault with a 9.875, with Mueller securing a 9.85. Fitzgibbon tied her career-high with a solid 9.825. Townes and Makayla Green rounded out the scores with a 9.775 and 9.75, respectively.Â
Illinois ended the night on bars with Kaitlyn Ewald securing the top team score with a 9.875. Rachel Borden and Olivia O'Donnell took the next top score with a 9.825 followed by Mizuki and Takekawa scoring a 9.8.Â
Mueller was the sole Illini in the all-around, finishing the meet with a 39.200.Â
THE ONE WHERE KADYN SHINED
Sophomore Kadyn Fitzgibbon had a standout meet in the Big Five where she had the top Illini floor score in her first-ever time in the lineup. She also tied her career-high on vault with a 9.825.
This is Fitzgibbon's first year competing, as she was injured and unable to compete last season.Â
SCOUTING REPORT
The Spartans are also coming off their Big Five meet, where they came in first place with a program best 197.675 in their first meet since Feb. 11.
Michigan State went up against No. 18 Minnesota, No. 13 Ohio State, Nebraska and Rutgers. The team averaged scores above a 9.900 and sophomore Gabi Stephen took the all-around title outright, tying her career-high 39.575 for the fourth-best all-around score in school history.Â
