CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Senior Crystal Wang was selected as the Big Ten Conference Women's Golfer of the Week after turning in one of the best individual performances in program history at the ICON Invitational, the conference announced on Wednesday (February 23).
Wang finished in a tie for third place after carding the lowest 54-hole tournament total in program history with a 13-under par 203. She opened the tournament by recording birdies on five of her first six holes on Monday (February 21) with rounds of 68-71 to sit in fifth place at five-under heading into the final round.
The Diamond Bar, Calif., native then birdied four of her first five holes on Tuesday (February 22) and finished with eight on the day as she carded an eight-under par 64 in her final round, which also marked the lowest single round score in program history. The senior led the field with 18 birdies in the tournament.
Wang's outstanding individual performance also helped Illinois to a runner-up team finish at the ICON Invitational as the Illini registered its lowest team 54-hole tournament score in program history with a 24-under par total of 840, while also breaking its previous record for lowest team round in program history with a 15-under 273 on Tuesday.
This marks the second career weekly honor for Wang after the senior earned the accolade following the team's final fall tournament in November.
Wang and the Illini next take on the Briar's Creek Invitational, held at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek in Johns Island, S.C., on March 14-15.
