CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois tight end Michael Marchese will return for the 2022 season, he announced Friday. Marchese was granted a sixth year at the University of Illinois by the NCAA.
"Big thank you to Coach Bielema and the whole staff for their effort on making this a possibility," said Marchese. "Can't wait to see what's in store for Illinois Football next year!"
Marchese was an Academic All-Big Ten performer, Wuerffel Trophy watch list honoree, and Allstate Good Works Team nominee in 2021. He had two receptions for 30 yards - including a near touchdown at #20 Minnesota for his first career catch - after switching from linebacker to tight end for the 2021 season.
Marchese has played in 43 career games for the Illini, primarily on defense and special teams. He totaled 47 career tackles and two interceptions before moving to the offensive side of the ball during Bret Bielema's first spring ball as head coach at Illinois.
He was awarded a scholarship by Bielema during a team meeting in April (video).
Marchese graduated with a degree in economics from the University of Illinois and is enrolled in the management master's program. He is a native of Vernon Hills, Illinois, and attended Stevenson High School.
