CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Former Illini teammates and captains Ted Karras and Clayton Fejedelem were named captains for the Miami Dolphins, head coach Brian Flores announced Monday. The pair are among eight Dolphins captains as voted on by the players.
"It's player-voted," Flores told The Palm Beach Post. "I think that's the right way to do it – allow the players to select who they feel are the leaders on the team that they want to speak for them because those captains, we have a captains meeting every week and we have conversations about everything from the schedule to game plan to any issues surrounding the team."
Karras and Fejedelem played for the Illini before both being selected in the 2016 NFL Draft. Karras, who has competed to be the Dolphins' starting center, was selected as an offensive captain, while Fejedelem is one of two special teams captains.
Karras won two Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots in his first four seasons in the league before signing a one-year, $4-million deal with Miami for 2020. He started 15 games for the Patriots last season.
Fejedelem spent his first four NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, totaling 117 tackles, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery, while playing mostly on special teams. Fejedelem was a special teams captain for the Bengals in 2019.
