CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – University of Illinois sophomore diver Taylor Shegos and freshman diver Erin Young were named to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) All-America team on Wednesday morning after Shegos qualified for the three-meter dive, and Young qualified for the platform dive at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships.
"I am glad to see that the CSCAA has acknowledged all the hard-work of all the student-athletes who are looking to compete in the NCAA Championships," said head diving coach Manny Pollard. "Unfortunately, because it was unable to be held due to COVID-19, it is still good to see that they rewarded the athletes who they felt deserved that award, who they felt earned it, even if it is not in the traditional sense. I am very happy to see that in the years of being the coach at the University of Illinois, that we continue to strive for greatness, and we continue to get better every single year, so this is just another mark for the new age of Illinois diving and the program as a whole. I know that having this award for Erin and Taylor will prove to them that that they are ready for better things, and that they can achieve things that they never thought they would be able to, so I am very happy for them and am excited to get future All-American athletes in the future."
Shegos became a two-time finalist at the 2019-20 Big Ten Championships, placing eighth in both the one- and three-meter events. The Fenton, Mich., totaled a 299.47 in the one-meter against Indiana State on Oct. 11, 2019, breaking a previous school record of 298.71 set in 2012 by Britni Fisher. The sophomore qualified for the Zone Championships during the 2018-19 season in both the one- and three-meter dives. Â
Young was the only Illini to compete in the platform dive at the 2019-20 Big Ten Championships, finishing 38th in the event with a score of 143.55. The Dana Point, Calif., native is one of the programs top-10 platform divers and saw action in all seven dual meets this season.
Shegos and Young become the fourth and fifth Illini divers in program history to be tabbed an All-American, joining Robin Duffy, Michelle Brown, and two-time honorable mention Sabine Taaffe.
