Tarique has his first significant playing time in the season opener against Wisconsin on Friday, October 23rd. Barnes had a team-high 11 tackles, seven of which were solo, 1.5 TFLs, 1.0 sack, and a 39-yard fumble return for a touchdown. This fumble recovery was a career first for Barnes.
After last week's performance, Barnes ranked within the Big Ten Conference and the nation for linebacker stats with the following:
- Barnes was fourth in the Big Ten and 14th in the nation in tackles per game (11.0) after week one.
- Barnes was the No. 4 graded linebacker in the nation after week one according to Pro Football Focus (88.2), behind only Tulsa's Zaven Collins (92.1), Army's Jon Rhattigan (90.40, and North Texas' Grayson Murphy (89.3).
- Barnes was the No. 6 graded linebacker in the nation last week according to Pro Football Focus.
Barnes begins his sophomore campaign after playing in all 13 games last year, primarily on special teams. He recorded 13 tackles, tied for the team lead in kick off tackles (4), second on the team in special teams tackles (8), and second on the team in punt return tackles (4).
