Big Ten Release

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois - Illinois freshman Mia Takekawa has been named both the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week and Freshman of the Week for her performance in the Illini's season-opening win at Missouri. Takekawa won the all-around title with a score of 39.325 to go along with titles on bars and beam. That all-around score is tied for ninth-best in the nation and highest by a freshman through one week of action.

The Sacramento, California, native recorded a 9.900 on beam and 9.825 on bars to earn shares of those titles. That 9.900 on beam tied for the seventh-best score in the country in week one. Takekawa is the first Illini to be named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week since Rae Balthazor on March 19, 2018. She is also the first Illini to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week since Nicole Biondi on March 6, 2018. No Illini has ever won both awards in the same week.

Takekawa and the No. 6 Illini are back in action at 7 pm CT Thursday as they host Temple and Lindenwood at Huff Hall in their first home meet of 2020.
