CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The No. 13 Fighting Illini women's gymnastics team set some season highs Saturday but lost to No. 16 Michigan, 196.700 - 195.650. Freshman Mia Takekawa led the way for Illinois with an all-around score of 39.275 and earned a split of the bars title with a score of 9.875.
Takekawa started the meet by setting a new season high for the Illini with a 9.800 on vault. That mark was short-lived, as sophomore Shaylah Scott followed immediately with a career-high 9.825.
"I think our athletes did a great job of, when they saw a mistake, not letting it implode," head coach Nadalie Walsh said. "They just picked themselves up and kept going. I think we did a great job. There's nothing to be ashamed of in this meet. You can't control what the judges give you or what the other team does. You can only control the excellence you put out there."
Senior Karen Howell recorded season highs in the all-around at 39.025 and on beam at 9.825. Freshman Lexi Powe set a season high on bars at 9.800. Freshman Mia Towens' 9.775 on vault was a season high.
The Illini return to action Saturday at Minnesota.
