FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Illini finished the first round of the 2019 NCAA Women's Golf Championships for 17th at 28-over-par on Friday at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
"Looking forward to another day on this great test of a golf course," said head coach Renee Slone. "Today was certainly a challenge for every team in the field."
Every team were over par as the course presented some challenges for the entire field. No. 4 Texas and host No. 7 Arkansas are both atop of the leaderboard with 10-over par, while a pair of Pac-12 teams, Stanford and reigning NCAA Champions, Arizona, are tied for third with 304 (+12).
Individually, only four players shot rounds under-par. Arizona's Bianca Pagdanganan leads the field with four-under par 69. Arizona's Haley Moore, Arkansas' Maria Fassi, and Texas' Emilee Hoffman are in a three-way tie for second with 72 (-1).
Veteran and lone senior Bing Singhsumalee had the Illini's best round of the day with 77 (+4), tying for 27th overall. Freshman Kornkamol Sukaree is tied for 53rd with 79 (+6), while junior Tristyn Nowlin is close behind with 80 (+7). She currently is tied for 67th.
Freshman Crystal Wang posted three birdies on the front nine, including back-to-back on holes 3 and 4. Wang is tied for 106th with 84 (+11). Freshman Katie Hallinan rounds out the fivesome sitting at 130th with 90 (+17).
"We did ourselves no favors by being out of position numerous times, which made things more difficult," noted Slone. "A tremendous learning experience though and we will put this info into action tomorrow."
Illinois will once again be paired with Washington and Virginia for Saturday's second round but will be part of the afternoon wave beginning at 11:55 a.m. CT on the 10th tee. The Orange and Blue will tee off in the order of Hallinan, Wang, Nowlin, Sukaree, and Singhsumalee.
