SUNSET, S.C. – After a round of play at the Clemson Invitational, the Fighting Illini women's golf team sits in third with 283 (-5) at The Reserve at Lake Keowee (Par-72, 6,260 yards).
"Solid start to the tournament," said head coach Renee Slone. "We will continue to focus on what we can control and look forward to building on this tomorrow."
The Orange and Blue were led by freshmen duo Crystal Wang and Kornkamol Sukaree. Both Wang and Sukaree are tied for seventh with a 69 (-3). Coming off of her experience at the August National Women's Amateur (ANWA), junior Tristyn Nowlin posted an even-par 72. She is coming back to the collegiate scene after having wrist surgery in February. Rounding out the fivesome is senior Bing Singhsumale and sophomore Ali Morallos, who are tied for 38th and 80th with a 69 (+3) and 76 (+4), respectively.
Competing as an individual, freshman Katie Hallinan posted four birdies and a 74 (+2) first round total.
Atop of the leaderboard are NCAA Championships participant, Auburn, and No. 8 Vanderbilt, who both lead with 278 (-10). Sitting behind the Illini are Virginia Tech with 285 (-3) and host Clemson and Purdue in fifth rounding out the top-five with 286 (-2).
The second round is slated for a 7Â a.m. CT/8Â a.m. ET start on Monday morning, while the final round of play is set for Tuesday morning.
