JOHNS ISLANDS, S.C. – The No. 19 Illinois women's golf team concluded the Briar's Creek Invitational on Tuesday afternoon, placing 11th with a three-round total of 887 (+23). The Illini carded rounds of 285-298-304 at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek (Par 72, 6101 yards) in Johns Islands, S.C.
Freshman Crystal Wang led the way for the Illini with a top-10 finish individually. Leading the field in pars (40), Wang tied for eighth overall with a 215 (-1). Newcomer Kornkamol Sukaree was in a three-way tie for 20th with a 219 (+3). She also was one of seven competitors to post an eagle during the tournament.
Returners Bing Singhsumalee and Ali Morallos finished 60th and 61st, respectively. Freshman Katie Hallinan recorded a career-best 71 (-1) in the first round, but a high number of bogeys in the final round caused her to finish 67th.
A pair of Big Ten schools topped the field – reigning Big Ten Champions, No. 21 Michigan State, took the crown with an 856 (-8) and Indiana followed with an even-par 864. No. 28 Campbell rounded out the top three with an 873 (+9), while No. 41 Old Dominion and host College of Charleston tied for fourth with an 877 (+13).
The Illini will have several weeks to refine their skills before heading back to the Palmetto State for the Clemson Invitational held at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset, S.C. The three-day tournament will begin on Sunday, April 7 and conclude on Tuesday, April 9.
