Shellie (Wood) Ruffin lettered for the Illini in 1989 and 1990, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors for the 1988-89 season. The native of Kentland, Indiana, currently lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with her husband, Craige, and their two daughters. She majored in Business/Marketing at Illinois and was an Operations Manager before settling into her current role at home with her kids.
I chose Illinois because: I wanted a school that offered great academics, sports, and social life. I loved the energy of Illinois when I visited. I remember walking onto the football field of an empty Memorial Stadium, feeling the excitement that surrounded the school, and deciding at that moment I wanted to attend.
Favorite team memory: There were many, but a highlight was our trip to Hawaii. The local alums were so kind and generous, and the golf and activities were amazing. One of the courses we played was near the Air Force Base, and watching the fighter jets fly by while playing along the ocean was a fun experience, and of course, attending a luau and snorkeling off the beach.
Favorite campus spot: The Quad - I always enjoyed the architecture of the buildings, looking at Foellinger Auditorium from the Union, and the bustling of students coming and going.
How did the University of Illinois prepare you for your career? It prepared me well giving me useful tools for work, such as leadership, hearing and seeing different approaches and ideas, time management, project management, and collaborating with others. Playing golf for U of I was a key factor in getting hired for a couple of my jobs - the hiring managers appreciated the necessary commitment.
What has been the most valuable lesson you learned from your time at Illinois? Not being afraid to challenge yourself past your comfort level - personally, professionally, or on the golf course.
How did the U of I help you grow during your college journey (golf, academics, personal)? The University of Illinois provided opportunity for growth in all areas. The golf team was a family away from family that was incredibly supportive while challenging me appropriately. The class options, and navigating the size of the school, let me build a solid, diverse foundation of skills that filter into my personal life.
How has the alumni network impacted your experience during your time on campus and following graduation? The alums we met while traveling or on campus were always supportive and encouraging. I've always found them very willing to make introductions, share job strategies, or just enjoy swapping campus stories. The initial conversation seems easier and more open with that connection. Though I live in a sea of Duke Blue Devils and UNC Tarheels, seeing a Fighting Illini sweatshirt or bumper sticker brings a flood of great memories!
How did being a member of the Illinois Women's Golf Team impact you? The team continues to be very special through friendships, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to play for U of I. It offers a unique perspective and connection to the university.
How would you describe your relationship with your teammates and coaches? Great! Friendships of a lifetime were formed because of the team. I'm always amazed at how our coach, Paula (at the time), knew each player so well and has a genuine, continued interest in everyone's well-being.
What skills did you gain/develop by being an Illini student-athlete? Greater discipline, goal setting, independence, leadership, and time management.
What do you miss most from your time on campus? The close proximity of friends and the flexibility to pursue interests. People often ask each other if they would choose the same school. There is no hesitation in my response of, "Yes!" Of course, when we meet on campus, we have to hit Custard Cup, Murph's, and Papa Del's!
What advice would you like to share with our current team members? Take advantage of the opportunity to pursue various interests while you are there; try to position yourself so you continue to have choices; and most importantly, enjoy, because it is a fantastic, unique time in your life.
Top item on my bucket list: Non-golf related - travel to all 50 states (two more left!); Golf related - travel back to Scotland to play golf, as the first trip (to visit a teammate) was thwarted by horrible weather and a shortage of time!
Last time you were on campus? Golf reunion about 5 years ago.
