URBANA, Ill. – Fighting Illini freshman Alex Brown earned his second-straight Big Ten Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honor, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon. Brown went 4-0 last week in the No. 7 Illini's two wins over No. 19 Notre Dame and Northwestern.
The Urbandale, Iowa, native collected two singles wins last week, including his third win over an ITA-ranked opponent in the past four matches. Brown defeated Northwestern's No. 110-ranked Antonioni Fasano on Friday night. Brown is currently riding a four-match singles winning streak.
Along with fellow-freshman, Caleb Chakravarthi, the duo has won six-straight doubles matches and compiled a team-leading 12-2 record at the No. 3 position. Brown and Chakravarthi clinched the doubles point against Notre Dame on Wednesday night. Â Â
Up next, the No. 7 Illini will take on the No. 1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons next Tuesday afternoon in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. First serve for the Top-10 matchup is set for 3 pm CT.Â
The three weekly conference honors matches the most in program history for an Illinois freshman. Brown is the first Illini freshman to win three Big Ten weekly awards since former three-time All-American, Jared Hiltzik, did it during the 2013 season. Brown's second-straight Big Ten Athlete of the Week nod gives the Illinois squad four honors this season.
