IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team came up short to both Iowa (198-102) and No. 22 Notre Dame (213-84) over the weekend in a two-day meet held in Iowa City, Iowa.
"Obviously you would like to see a closer score, but there were some positives to take away from the trip," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "For the most part we were a stronger team than last year, many of the performances were faster than at this time a year ago. The team handled the long road trip with all of the traveling well. While on the road we were able to put in some good work and come out pretty healthy. We were starting to see people put the items we have been working on in practice and executing them in their races. So we have a strong foundation that we are starting from this spring."
Seniors Samantha Stratford and Ashley Aegerter each came away with an event win for the Illini. Stratford won the 200 individual medley, touching the wall in a time of 2:05.65, while Aegerter finished first in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.16).
"Ashley had a strong meet," Novitsky added. "She raced really tough and keeps working to find ways to get better."
Next Up
The Illini will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, to take on the Cornhuskers on Saturday, January 20. Meet competition is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT.
"We definitely have to keep working on cleaning up details, staying focused in practice and we have to be willing to keep pushing for that next level."
