Freshman All-America Team
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois second baseman Michael Massey was named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-America Team, the publication announced Wednesday. Massey is the 13th Illini to earn freshmen all-America honors from Collegiate Baseball and the first since Adam Walton in 2014.
Massey was a third team All-Big Ten selection and Big Ten All-Freshmen Team pick after hitting .330 with 12 doubles, six homers and 36 RBIs during his first season in Champaign. He led Big Ten freshmen in hits (69) and led Big Ten second basemen in batting average during conference games (.354).
Massey also shined defensively for the Illinois club that currently ranks second in the nation in double plays per game (1.18). The Palos Park, Illinois, native made just six errors while playing nearly every inning of all 51 games at second base for a .977 fielding percentage.
