KENNESAW, Ga. – The Illinois women's golf team is in sixth place after the first two rounds of play at the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate. The Fighting Illini carded a 295 (+7) in the first round and a 294 (+6) in the second round for a 589 (+13) overall at the Pinetree Country Club (Par 72, 6,032 yards).
"We hit a lot of good shots, just didn't necessarily take advantage of the scoring opportunities," said head coach Renee Slone. "It was a test of patience, and the team overall did a good job of staying patient today, we just didn't capitalize on the opportunities we gave ourselves. We made a few mental errors from a course management standpoint, shot selection standpoint, and there were a few energy management issues. We just need to maintain our energy level to enable ourselves to play our best."
Illinois is led by Tristyn Nowlin, who posted a 74 (+2) in the first round and a 71 (-1) in the second round for a 145 (+1) overall and a tie for 12th place. Chayanid Prappassarangkul is right behind her with a 73 (+1) after the first round and a 75 (+3) in the second round, finishing in a tie for 23rd at 148 (+3) overall.
Swing Liu, Grace Park and Bing Singhsumalee are all tied for 39th, and have scores of 150 (+6) overall. Liu carded two rounds of 75 (+3), while Grace shot a 73 (+1) in the first round and a 77 (+4) in the second, and Singhsumalee posted a 77 (+4) in the first round and a 73 (+1) in the second round.
Competing as an individual, Dana Gattone is currently tied for 19th, after a career-best 68 (-4) in the first round and a 79 (+7) in the second round for a three-over-par score.
"For tomorrow, we need to work a little bit on our positioning on the green, to be on the side of the hole that enables ourselves to be aggressive, and then continuing to be aware of what's around the hole, what's past the hole, so that we make good decisions," Slone said.
The final round of the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate will tee off Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. CT.
