SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - The Fighting Illini finished in second place at the Cardinal Cup in Simpsonville, Kentucky. The Orange and Blue recorded rounds of 288-299-298 for a final score of 885 (+21).
"Two out of the three rounds were solid," head coach Renee Slone said. "Today's round was very strong considering the windy weather conditions and challenging course set up. Very positive to have the low team round and low individual round on the day."
Sophomore Tristyn Nowlin led the way for the Illini, finishing with a three day reading of 75-74-71 for a 220 (+4) total. The Kentucky native finished in third place overall, matching a career-best.
"The key for me this weekend was staying patient and relaxed," Nowlin said. "This course offers some good challenges, but also some good opportunities. Staying patient allowed me to take advantage of the opportunities and play smart when facing some challenges."
Junior Bing Singhsumalee wasn't far behind Nowlin, tying for fourth place and carding rounds of 72-74-75 for a total of 221 (+5). Tying for ninth place was senior Chayanid Prapassarangkul, who finished with rounds of 71-76-76 for a final score of 223 (+7).
Freshman Ali Morallos tied for 13th, recording scores of 70-75-79 (+8). After identical rounds of 77 (+5) yesterday, senior Dana Gattone turned in a final round score of 76 (+4), totaling 230 (+14) and finishing tied for 37th overall.
Host Louisville won the event at the University of Louisville Golf Club (Par 72, 6,250) with a score of 877 (+13). Wisconsin finished in third with a 28-over-par score, while East Carolina and Kent State rounded out the top five, tying for fourth at +31.
"I think the team needs to keep the positive energy high," Nowlin said. "We all agree that it has been a big key to our success this fall and we have done a great job maintaining our energy throughout the season."
