DES MOINES, Iowa - A pair of Fighting Illini men's track and field decathletes got the weekend started for the Orange and Blue at the Drake Relays on Wednesday. Through the first five events of the decathlon,
Corey Hammon is currently in 10th place with 3,543 points, while
George Wayda is in 19th after accumulating 3,296 points.
The day began with the 100m dash, in which the Illini duo each scored their highest point totals of the day. Hammon finished seventh with a time of 11.10, tallying 838 points. Wayda clocked a personal-best time of 11.61 to finish 21st, good for 730 points.
In the long jump, Hammon bounded 6.51m (21' 4.25"), finishing 13th and collecting 700 points. Wayda was 19th with a season-best leap of 6.19m (20' 3.75"), giving him 628 points.
The third event of the day was the shot put, in which Wayda claimed a top-10 finish. He grabbed seventh with a personal-best toss of 12.77m (41' 10.75"), good for 653 points. Hammon finished 16th with a throw of 11.81m (38' 9"), collecting 595 points.
In the high jump, Hammon finished tied for 12th with a clearance of 1.87m (6' 1.50"), racking up 687 points. Wayda tied for 16th with a leap of 1.84m (6' 0.50"), grabbing 661 points.
The final event of the day was the 400m dash. Hammon again grabbed a top-10 finish, placing 10th with a time of 52.04 to collect 723 points. Wayda finished 21st after clocking 54.39, good for 624 points.
Thursday's action will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the remaining five events of the decathlon. The Illini duo will compete in the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m run throughout the day.
