FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Fighting Illini men's track and field wrapped up the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday with three strong performances. Illinois finished the weekend with three first-team All-Americans, tallying eight points to finish tied for 23rd.
"We had a really good championship meet," said head coach Mike Turk. "Overall, everyone competed very well and the 4x400m relay had an outstanding finish to the weekend for us."
The 4x400m relay team of David Kendziera, Kenneth Allen, Joe McAsey and DJ Zahn entered the weekend with the 10th-fastest time. On Saturday, they finished fourth with a time of 3:06.58, breaking the Illinois school record and becoming the first relay team on the podium since Nathan Vadeboncoeur, Abe Jones, Tramell Smith and Adrian Walker finished runner-up in 2006.
Zahn also garnered first-team All-America honors in the 400m. He finished seventh in 46.69, becoming the first Illini since Gakologelwang Masheto in 2007 to finish in the top eight.
Jonathan Wells also represented the Orange and Blue on Saturday. In his NCAA Championships debut, he cleared 2.15m (7' 0.50") in the high jump to finish 13th.
"Although we fell just short of our program goal of a top-20 finish, we are pleased with 23rd place as a team," Turk explained. "I'm pleased with the way these guys represented our program and the university. It's back to work now for the outdoor season. I think we have a chance to surpass what we accomplished indoors."
The outdoor track and field season begins next weekend when the Illini travel to Las Vegas, Nevada for the UNLV Spring Invitational on March 20-21.
